Human beings have been given five senses- The senses of smelling, hearing, tasting, touching and seeing. All of these senses are invaluable to us on a daily basis.
Today, I want to focus on VISION – the eyes that see. Sight is defined as “the ability to see”. Someone who is not able to see is referred to as “blind.”
We all remember the story of blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10 v 26-52. Bartimaeus was a blind man who because of his disability sat at the roadside begging. His day of Divine Visitation came when Jesus who was passing by, called him and asked him what he would want Him (Jesus) to do for him. The answer to this question was “Master, let me receive my sight!” Bartimaeus as we know received his sight at once. Here we have a case of a physically blind man receiving his sight.
But just as there is physical sight, there is also spiritual sight. Man is a triune being made up of body, soul and spirit. 1 Thessalonians 4 v 23b says “I pray God your whole spirit, soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” In the bible we have read about the rich man and Lazarus.
The rich man having died went to hell but all his senses (spiritual senses) were intact. While the rich man’s relations on earth were throwing a grand burial party in memory of the rich man, his dead body remained in a coffin, but his spiritual body languished in hell.
In Luke 16 v 23 the rich man lifted up his eyes (sense of sight); in verse 24 he requested that a drop of water be placed on his tongue (sense of taste); in verse 24 also he was in anguish because of the flames (sense of touch); in verse 27 he responded to what he heard Abraham say (sense of hearing).
There is a story in the bible whereby a spiritually blind man received his sight. In 2 Kings 6 v 17 God opened the spiritual eyes of Elisha’s servant so that he could see into the spiritual realm and observe the many horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha spiritually as opposed to the fewer in number of horses, chariots and the great army of the Syrian King that surrounded the city physically.
It is my prayer today that the Lord will open your spiritual eyes to see that which He wants you to see.
This leads us to “Vision”: – Vision is defined as the power of sight, Vision means ONE SIGHT. It also means the following:-
- Seeing the future before it comes into being.
- A mental picture of your destiny.
- Being set free from the limitations of what the eyes can see.
Vision has the following characteristics:-
- Vision is a function of the heart (sight is a function of the eyes).
- Vision provides endurance in times of tribulation. In Hebrews 12 v 2 we find that Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith had great vision whilst he was on earth and this therefore caused Him not to be distracted but caused him to be focused on the joy that was set before Him.
- Vision brings out the “gold” in you (the best in you). The bible says we have this treasure in earthen vessels. Vision influences the way you conduct your life because you are mindful of the treasure on the inside of you. Vision chooses your friends, hobbies and how you spend your time and energy.
Dear reader, have you discovered what your vision is? Why not embark on discovering God’s vision for your life as from today. It will benefit you. Once you discover what your vision is, you’ll find that you can put your whole self into it. It will fill your life with new hope and purpose. It gives you a reason for living.
